I am so thrilled to introduce my first refurbished furniture to the world. I have to confess that I didn’t know what to do, I mean which color, which design, and so on, because there were so many things I wanted to try. Soon I decided to go with “color painted but neutral look” with this “not so old, but clean dresser” from Craigslist with light purple crackled finish on it. Later I happened to spot a Oops Wales Gray(kind of blue gray) paint in local Benjamin Moore store, so I got it with Dolphin(gray) for design.
First thing I did was washing and drying it in the sun to sanitize the piece, even though it was very clean. When it was totally dried, I sanded the surface of the dresser with 100 grit sand paper(wrapped around a sanding sponge) and then one more sanding with a sanding sponge itself(I forgot to check the grit, but it was very fine).
I applied three coats of home made chalk paint which I made with Wales Gray and non-sanded grout(recipe: 1 cup of paint, 2 Tbsp of non-sanded grout, and some water, which I found here) and between the coats and after the final coat, I sanded whole surface with a sanding sponge.
I added design with painter’s tape and painted in Dolphin and sanded area where the dresser might naturally wear over the time with a 220 grit paper.
I applied Provincial stain with lint free rags to achieve a old look and wipe out the excessive stain and I found out that provincial stain changed blue gray into glazed green. I think a chalky part of the paint abosorbed stain and changed the color. It was unexpected, but I still like it. Here I added the photo of Wales Gray and the photo of the similar color of the result.
After giving it enough drying time(my case was 4 days, because I was busy doing other stuffs), I sprayed polycrylic to give more protection to the piece.
And finally… Here it is!!! My first refurbished furniture.
I like the new look of this dresser. It has very calm, neutral, old, yet interesting look. I love it and I am so thankful to God for giving me this exciting moment.
